Hello Reader,
“We've gone through a lot in these blogs. Therapy is much more than just talking. I didn’t know that until your blogs!” – Reader
Yes, it is very strategic and intentional. Even more so why it is important to find the right therapist for you!
Modalities that we have explored and talked about so far are, CBT, DBT, and ACT. Let’s look at EFT or Emotionally Freedom Technique!
EFT is a strategic approach that can assist with lowering the intensity of symptomology around anxiety, depression, traumas, and much more. One of the great things with EFT is that once it is practiced, you can use it in everyday situations!
At its basis, EFT takes after acupuncture and “taps” on specific areas of the body to release tension that is held. It is a way of telling the body, “You are safe”. A way of getting out of the sympathetic nervous system (fight, flight, freeze or fawn) and back into the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest). Away from the amygdala of our brain and back into our prefrontal cortex which will help us navigate situations in a healthier way.
“This sounds a bit weird, Jon. You mean tapping on my body is therapeutic??” – Reader
I know it sounds weird but yes! It is very therapeutic and an evidence-based approach to our mental health. Seeking out evidence-based approaches is important because there are many pop-psychology techniques out there and I want to make sure you don’t fall into one of those traps! With that said, I want to keep an open mind so if pop-psychology techniques work for you, great, go for it! I want to make sure I am a therapist that has evidence behind what I do, and EFT is one of those modalities.
Below is a diagram as to where these pressure points are often located.

In my experience, I have found that EFT helps clients face strong thoughts, feelings, emotions, and memories that way they can continue to work on improving themselves.
The best way I can describe the experience is that after a few sessions, you know that the thought or memory used to be making you feel in an intense way and it does not anymore. It doesn’t fix the situation as we can’t change the past, but we can change how we feel about past events. EFT does exactly this!
Key takeaways:
1) EFT is an evidence approach to understanding and managing strong thoughts, feelings, emotions, and memories.
2) EFT takes after acupuncture
3) Once understood, EFT can be practice on your own to ease tension.
4) EFT can be a useful tool to face the things that you might be afraid to face.
